5 Facts About Parshat Pekudei that You (Maybe) You Didn't Know

Published on Wednesday March 6th, 2019

All the gold that was used for the work, in all the work of the sanctuary—the elevation offering of gold—came to 29 talents and 730 shekels by the sanctuary weight.

What happened to the leftover gold?

  • Although most goldsmiths will always have some gold left over after fashioning a utensil, there was miraculously no gold left after the golden vessels of the Mishkan were constructed. In fact, the world doesn’t deserve gold. It was created exclusively for the building of the Temple.

Then they brought the Tabernacle to Moses, with the Tent and all its furnishings: its clasps, its planks, its bars, its posts, and its sockets;

How was the Mishkan actually erected?

  • The people were unable to erect the Mishkan upon its completion. This is because Hashem wanted Moshe to put it up as he did not take part in its construction. Hashem told Moshe to pretend as if he was putting it up, but in reality, it rose up and stood on its own.

How were the planks of wood covered with gold without tools?

  • The planks of wood had to be covered with planks of gold. However, since it was forbidden to use a hammer and nails in the construction of the Mishkan, a miracle occurred, and the gold and wood planks simply fused together.

The pure lampstand, its lamps—lamps in due order—and all its fittings, and the oil for lighting;

How was the Menorah built?

  • Despite Hashem showing Moshe how to construct the Menorah from a single gold block, Moshe was simply unable to do so. Therefore, Hashem told him to throw the gold into the fire, and miraculously, the Menorah emerged.

Moses set up the Tabernacle, placing its sockets, setting up its planks, inserting its bars, and erecting its posts.

What happened to the Mishkan’s cover while Moshe was setting it up?

  • The cover of the Mishkan miraculously supported itself in the air until Moshe fastened it to the boards.
