100 Looted Sifrei Torah Will Be Returned to the Jews

Published on Tuesday January 19th, 2021

More than one hundred Sifrei Torah stolen by the Nazis from various Jewish communities in Europe have recently been located in... Russia. There are 103 Sifrei Torah, which was confiscated at the time of the Holocaust, and have now been found in the Lenin Library in the city of Nazi Novgorod.

Most of the objects come from Hungary, where the Jews were not only persecuted and murdered but had the treasures of their community looted and stolen. During the war, Nazi soldiers entered Jewish communities and methodically stole their treasures from synagogues, private homes, and even from banks where some Judaica items were deposited.

Much of the treasures plundered by the Germans arrived in the Soviet Union, and the Sifrei Torah looted from synagogues throughout Hungary were also sent to Russia.

In recent years, the fate of these sacred objects has been repeatedly debated, and although Russian law stipulates that goods looted during the Shoah do not belong to Russia, these Kodesh books have remained in foreign hands.

Most recently, Rav Shlomo Kovech, Chabad Emissary in Hungary, managed to go to the library and to clearly prove that the origin of the 100 Torah scrolls and other Judaica items are Hungarian. The director of an important center in Russia also admitted that everything in Niz Novgorod archives come from Hungary.

In recent days, there has been a significant development, and very soon the books will be transferred to Israel.
